Cow Base
Coodardie’s cow base stands at approximately 2000 head. Half of these are the stud herd with the remainder being commercial cows producing for the live export market. Both herds are run under the same conditions - unimproved northern pastures, basic mineral supplemtation and planned grazing.
The Coodardie herd is approximately equal parts red and grey. The elite grey herd is run at Coodardie, the red and remainder of the breeders are at Numul Numul Station. Good pigmentation is considered of economic importance and we have an emotional attachment to a few spots here and there.
All our females are regularly and rigorously assessed. The dry females are pregnancy tested. Any empties are culled via the live export trade as fat cows/heifers. Now that our fencing program and feral bull control is improving we have moved to controlled mating. On the larger scale at Numul Numul this is still a challenge and a work in progress. Through this and with improved nutrition soon all cows will be preg-tested and expected to have raised a calf and successfully returned to produce again that season.
