Fertility and Performance
No mature Coodardie bull is sold for breeding purposes without first being semen tested sound.
This is done on-site (crush side) by Moira Lanzarin. She has been fully trained by Alf Turner, NT Artificial Breeding Services and accredited by DPIF Charles Darwin University in bovine fertility work.
All animals are run on the unimproved native pasture with basic mineral supplementation.
Three year old bulls must have a minimum scrotal circumference of 32 cm with good even shape and prominent epydimis. They must have at least 70% NORMAL sperm morphology. Any animal that does not reach these standards is sent for eventual slaughter via the live export market.
Likewise our females are regularly and rigorously assessed. The dry females are pregnancy tested. Any empties are culled via the live export trade as fat cows/heifers. Now that our fencing program and feral bull control is improving we have moved to controlled mating. On the larger scale at Numul Numul this is still a challenge and a work in progress. Through this and with improved nutrition soon all cows will be preg-tested and expected to have raised a calf and successfully returned to produce again that season.
